Many users frequently encounter problems such as unresponsive lock bolts, stiff door closing, random alarms and rapid battery drain during smart lock usage. Most people tend to suspect product quality issues. However, the majority of failures stem from improper installation. As high-precision mechatronic devices, smart locks require higher standards for installation accuracy, accessory matching and operating procedures compared with traditional mechanical locks. Even minor installation deviations can cause long-term internal wear and circuit loss, eventually leading to malfunctions. Below are the five most frequent installation mistakes and their standardized fixes.

Mistake 1: Reversed Lock Cylinder Direction Causing Structural Misalignment

Performance: The unlocking direction of physical keys and indoor knobs is opposite to normal usage habits. The door frame hits the side of the lock bolt directly when closing, resulting in obvious resistance and jamming.

Consequences: Increased door-closing resistance forces the smart lock motor to operate under continuous overload. This leads to overheating, motor burnout and severely shortened motor lifespan. Correct Method: Confirm the lock bolt orientation before installation. The inclined surface of the bolt must face the door-closing direction, so that the bolt retracts automatically and smoothly under the pressure of the door frame without rigid collision or resistance.

Mistake 2: Misaligned Door Frame Strike Plate Leading to Idle Bolt Movement

Performance: The lock makes continuous clicking noises after door closure. The lock bolt fails to lock in place accurately, requiring repeated pushing or pulling of the door to complete locking.

Consequences: The motor repeatedly activates and attempts bolt extension, resulting in drastic power consumption and continuous gear wear. Long-term misalignment causes bolt jamming, locking failure and significant reduction in the overall service life of the smart lock.

Correct Method: With the door fully closed, check whether the lock bolt is precisely centered with the strike plate hole. Slightly adjust the hole position with a file for minor deviations; install gaskets for serious misalignment to ensure smooth and accurate bolt extension and retraction.

Mistake 3: Over-Tightened Screws Causing Panel Deformation and Component Damage

Performance: Excessively tightened fixing screws deform the front and rear panels, resulting in sunken fingerprint areas, warped edges and uneven key pressing feedback.

Consequences: Deformed panels squeeze internal sensors and flexible cables. Uneven pressure on fingerprint sensors reduces recognition accuracy or causes total recognition failure. Squeezed internal wires may break or loose contact, leading to system freeze and functional failure.

Performance: Reusing old square shafts or self-cut irregular shafts leads to mismatched lengths, unlinked internal and external handles, and sluggish handle rebound.

Consequences: Overlong square shafts jam the internal structure and prevent handle rebound. Undersized shafts cause idling and asynchronous handle movement, resulting in unlocking failure and abnormal door closure in severe cases.

Correct Method: Use only the original factory-equipped square shaft. Reserve a 5–10 mm flexible margin according to official instructions before cutting. Polish the cut surface thoroughly to remove burrs and ensure flexible rotation and perfect matching.

Mistake 5: Reversed Battery Polarity or Mixed Old and New Batteries Damaging the Circuit Board

Performance: The smart lock fails to power on, shows a black screen, or triggers frequent low-battery alarms after installation.

Consequences: Reversed battery polarity causes instant current impact, burning out the circuit board and leading to permanent damage. Mixing old and new batteries or different brands causes over-discharge, battery leakage and oxidation, corroding electrodes and battery compartments and inducing poor contact or short-circuit risks.

Correct Method: Install batteries strictly according to the positive and negative polarity marks inside the battery compartment. Use only new batteries of the same brand and batch; never mix old and new batteries or different brands.
